How the check digit works
The check digit is the last digit of an EAN or GTIN. It lets scanners and systems detect mistyped or misread numbers.
- Starting from the right, multiply the digits alternately by 3 and 1. The digit next to the check digit gets weight 3.
- Add up the products.
- The check digit is the amount needed to reach the next multiple of ten. If the sum is already a multiple of ten, the check digit is 0.
The same rule works for every GTIN length. A correct check digit does not mean that GS1 has assigned the number.
